Open Question: Any natural ways to keep bugs away from my house?

My boyfriend and I (21 years old) recently purcahsed a condo. Its more of a town-house style (we have a garage/basement, 1st, and 2nd floor)... I'm very clean! I vacuum at least once a day (if not more). I have 2 cats and I keep their food on the top floor...(3rd floor if you consider the basement/garage a floor..but there is a ground-level entry on the main level of the house..).. I keep the kitchen counters cleaned, all food is sealed in cabinents or in the fridge... no crums on the counter...i mean, we all get an occasional crumb...but for the most part - I'm very clean. One down fall (something we have to STOP doing with the warm weather approaching...) is that we put our garbage bags out on the back porch (ground level)..my boyfriends "job" is to take the garbage to the dumpster and sometimes he'll leave it there for a few days until there are 2 bags - so that he doesnt have to go to the dumpster twice (which is silly b/c the dumpster is not far away)... With the warmer weather approaching this is just ASKING for rodents and other bugs!! We have agreed to stop doing that. If he doesnt want to go to the dumpster right away - I'll do it!! Asside from being clean and keeping the garbage away (and keeping windows and doors properly sealed)...what are some other ways of keeping unwanted creatures outside?? I dont mind them outside on the porch (bugs that is)... I like nature, I do have some flowers and seedlings growing outside - but I'd rather not have the insects/other bugs inside the house. There was a book out a while ago (always advertised on TV) about all these natural remedies..... I'd rather do something natural rather than use chemicals (becuase I do have pets)... I'd like to be able to put something near my doors and windows becuase I dont want to be in fear every time I have my windows/sliding door opened (with the screen in) BTW all this came about because of a HUGE HUGE HUGE centapede that I found crawling on my back window. I've heard that they like moist places, but the air in my house is VERY dry...so I dont know why that buggie was in here!!  more

Open Question: Huge flea problem! I want to bomb my house. Is it safe on clothes? Is it safe on toys? Will it work?

I used flea powder on the carpet then I vacuumed. I waited a couple of days then I steam cleaned my carpets and I washed all bedding. I moved all toys/shoes from closets out onto hardwood floor so they couldn't jump back onto carpet and such. I left for 2 days and when I returned it seems that fleas are even worse. They are still in carpet and they are all over hardwood floor and tile. I've read up on borox for the carpet which sounds great and pretty harmless to the cat and kids but it is looking like the hardwood and tile is an even bigger problem (from what I've read on line). I would like to bomb the entire house, wait a few days and then bomb it again while staying elsewhere. When I come back I would follow through with borox on carpet and rewashing linens. Does anybody see a reason why not to do this? Do you know the affects on clothes? I would prefer not to wash all of the clothes as there are many and lots would need dry cleaning. I also know when you bomb you have to leave closets open or it defeats the purpose. Onto toys, if I keep them bagged, there still could be fleas living on them that I would just be putting back into the clean environment. Makes sense to have them in their natural places to be bombed as well. My child is no longer at the oral stage but is still considered a toddler. HELP!!! I need answers before I start doing things I would find out later I shouldn't have done. Final question, do exterminator services do that much better of a job one time that it would be worth the much higher cost to just have them do it instead of doing it myself? I forgot to add that I did use the on the neck stuff at the cat and I have her at a facility right now so she is away from the infested environment. The stuff I used is off the counter which I have since found out does practically nothing. Unfortunately, I can't redo her or anything because it would be like double toxitity. I think I will try that baby oil thing. Only problem is that it may wash away some of the medicine that is partially working.  more

Voting Question: My room how can I lock it up? My fracken bros.?

I'm 16, 2 brothers 11 and 6 1 sister 4. I have to go to school early, and I find out today 11 yr. bro jams a fork in my door and prys it open, even though it's locked. Talking to parents does not work, they say I should not have a doorknob anyways, basically meaning they don't give a rats ass. I paid 15 dollars for this last doorknob, and over the last 2 years I have bought 3. I have video games they want to play, money they steal and their excuse is lunch money but those queer-baits buy pop tarts, *cough weed *cough.... Also have a lizard they might mess with and they will take his food (meal-worms) and give them to the cat to play with, I buy those damned worms. Also not too long ago Noah, 11, finished a Cheetos bag and dropped it onto the floor and listened to my 120G $249.99 iPod Classic with cheesy fingers. I had to vacuum up the ants as well as EXTREMELY CAREFULLY clean my iPod, the warranty doesn't cover water damage. I punched Noah so hard I am surprised they didn't have to amputate his arm. This fueled his desire to go in my room. No, I am not exaggerating at all. I need a way to lock up my door, but What is their besides doorknobs? I have $28 (Would have $30 but $2 stolen) and I can go to some hardware stores to buy professional locks or something. And another thing. No bullshit answers about talking to my brothers, I have tried that and they really don't care. They will laugh and ask me when I am done talking... Help is strongly appreciated, also I would prefer it if I didn't have to buy anything but again I need a way to keep my room pest-free when I am at school in the mornings, friends houses on weekends, and at work.  more

Resolved Question: I think I have the bed bugs? How is it possible?

For the past 3 or 4 weeks I have woken up with these mysterious bites that keep appearing every morning when I wake up. I thought they were mosquito bites that came from my bus stop every morning. So I just ignored it for a couple of days, but more and more came in. My cats also had the fleas at the time, but when my mom analyzed the bites, they were too big to be flea bites. Every morning I woke up, I would get more and more bites by the minute. That's when I started wearing bug spray. I sprayed some on my body before I went to school, but the next morning more bites came in. I was shocked. Most of the bites appeared to be on my feet and ankles. My mom said if it's not the fleas, they are bed bugs. I learned that bed bugs usually come in when you're dirty. I don't see how that's possible because I take showers every day, and if I eat in my room, I'd pick up the food. So, I bombed my room twice, vacuumed my room and my mattress from head to toe, washed my sheets, and used bug spray, and absolutely nothing helped whatsoever. I even tried making my own bed out of clean pillows, sheets and a sleeping bag, and I lasted without bugs for only 2 days. After 2 days, they fed on me even in my clean pillows and sheets. How many tries does it take to kill these little bastards? Would changing the sheets work? I am so sick and tired of waking up every morning with new bites! What do I do to kill them? Thank you. My room is clean, I cleaned it like 5 times already!  more

Resolved Question: Shared a house with my mother and I'M AT WAR?

My mother is a hoarder.likes to collect useless junk and put them in bags and stash them into corners. I like a simple clean modern style, kinda similar to ikea home, but she's driving me nuts.Down to the way I feed my son, bathe him, clothes I buy, lotion I buy, clean, do laundry, cook, vacuum EVERYTHING! I decided to help my fam and I got a huge house, instead of getting married and moving to Cali with my sons father, so we could all live comfortably, but now I'm going insane..UGGHHHHHH! I have sensitive skin so I invested in natural cleaning products for me as we as my son, but the other day I saw her mopping the floor with ammonia. My son is crawling right now and I don't want any chemicals, esp. amonnia around him.I asked her if she would stop washing the floors with it( which I don't do anymore cuz she compains the natural cleaners aren't good, and i don't do a good job. I use melaleuca !!!!).I threw out the leftover bottle and she went back and bought a new one and continued to wash the floors with it. I'm on MAT leave so I don't go back to work until august and she told me that she's not going back until then as well and just collect welfare. I'm so mad, but I love the house and hate being at war, any suggestions? BTW I'm dealing with a `person who likes to yell at any given chance she gets..  more

I'm like no, I wanted to tell her what I wanted I go outside to see where mom is and she is inside and my mom was like your brothers told me you wear swearing at your little brother. Saying the get the * over here and get your * work done . I NEVER Told my little brother that! I want to take a lying test, I didn't say that. My mom's going to believe them. My little brother was working well with me I never told him I only screamed his name to get the vacuum that's the worst thing I have done today. How do I get my mom to believe me? Please help! Thanks!!!  more

Voting Question: What is the meaning of The Vacuum by Howard Nemerov?

The Vacuum The house is so quiet now The vacuum cleaner sulks in the corner closet, Its bag limp as a stopped lung, its mouth Grinning into the floor, maybe at my Slovenly life, my dog-dead youth. I've lived this way long enough, But when my old woman died her soul Went into that vacuum cleaner, and I can't bear To see the bag swell like a belly, eating the dust And the woollen mice, and begin to howl Because there is old filth everywhere She used to crawl, in the corner and under the stair. I know now how life is cheap as dirt, And still the hungry, angry heart Hangs on and howls, biting at air. I already got the idea that his wife used to be a very neat person but she passed away. The vacuum is a symbol of his wife and the life they had together. I think there is more than that to the poem, anybody help? Thanks~  more

Voting Question: IE history shows pages I haven't visited?

Over the past 2 weeks my comptuer has started acting funny. My itunes freezes, windows media freezes occasionally, and my internet has frozen a few times. I have symantic anti-virus, and I also downloaded spybot and ad-aware which both came back clean. Then today I was looking through my history and I noticed that over the past 3 weeks my history shows access to pages that I haven't visited (no they aren't porn sites) Mostly weird search ques like "discount mattress, vacuum bag, drug rehab treatments, and carolina pather tickets) The same search que's have popped via a number of sites (look4bull, primosearch, google, yahoo) I haven't accessed these and no-one else has access to my computer, I wouldn't have noticed if it was just one site, but it's quite a few and it spans 2+ weeks ... Resolved Question: Can you vacuum seal cooked rice and not keep refridgerated?

I have a vacuum sealer and I want to cook rice seal it and take it on extended pack trips where there will be no refrigeration. This will help cut down on fuel. Trader Joes, Kashi, Uncle Bens, etc... sell bags of cooked rice this way. Does anyone know if this is safe to do it yourself or are they adding a preservative? I would also like to do this with cooked lentils and beans? any suggestions. How safe is it to then boil bags to reheat. Is there BPA in the plastic? If I can reheat in plastic, it reduces any clean up and gives me drinkable water or hot tea! Again reducing fuel. Thank you for an tips or suggestion.  more

Resolved Question: Kill dust mites inside the vacuum cleaner?

Hi, I already have a Miele vacuum cleaner, which I am very happy with. However, I was looking for a product that would kill the dust mites inside the hoover bag - I am thinking, all these particles would be trapped in there rather than being killed. What is the best product to be used as an add-on for my Miele vacuum cleaner? A filter or something? Would be grateful for any ideas!  more

Resolved Question: Any ideas for a great vacuum?

I have a one-year old and lots of crumbs on my floor that our vacuum won't pick up. We currently have a bag less Bissell and I hate it. We've replaced all the filters and cleaned it but it still hardly picks up a thing. It leaves little hair balls on our carpet and kicks dust back in the air. I have to open the windows every time I vacuum so we can breathe! We're looking to get a new vacuum and I am interested in any brand and reviews you can recommend. My parents have had an Electrolux for 10+ years and it works great. However, the price tag ($500) is a little much for me. I'd also rather not go bag less again. Any suggestions? We are actually renting right now, so Central vacuum isn't an option. Though it would be nice!  more

Resolved Question: How to get rid of foul bedroom odor?

Okay, so yesterday I came home from church and there was an awful stink in my room. But I had just cleaned it on Saturday. I never eat in my bedroom. Actually, I think I once ate a plain cracker in here, but I ate the whole thing. Anyways, I checked my laundry hamper, which is almost empty- no bad smell( the clothes all smell like vanilla, which is my body spray) I checked all of my suitcases and bags, most of which are empty. I checked my armour drawers, nothing(once again, vanilla, no matter how many times I wash my clothes they smell like me) And I took my book bag to school today, it didn't smell. But the odor has just gotten worse since yesterday. I followed it to where it is strongest, which is just a place right by my window. There's nothing there. And I just vacuumed. Currently, I have just used half a bottle of air freshener and opened the windows. I even had my mom anD sister, who are major clean freaks, come in and they could not find the source of the smell. It REEKS! How do I get rid of it? Oh, we just moved in about 2 and a half weeks ago.  more

Resolved Question: Does this sound reasonable for a cleaning job?

So I think I'm considering a cleaning job for a Saturday morning.. I'm in my late teens, I dont have allot of experience with this. I normally nanny.. But I love to clean and clean my own house top to bottom non stop.. I'm thinking 15/hr. with a $60 minimum for an average/small house. and a $75 dollar minimum for a large house. I'd come late morning, Dust, Clean all windows and doors, I'd sweep, I'd do all vacuuming, I would shake all matts and small rugs out outside. I'd then clean down the kitchen counters, and sink, and appliances. Then I'll clean the kitchen floor, by hand! Then I'd go upstairs, and get the bathrooms.. Windows, vaccume rooms.. ECT. And for an extra.. $5 a time, I'd do the main sheets and pillow cases and make up the bed.. I'd also clean the cat little if they have a cat! Oh, and I'll provide all my cleaners and such. EXCEPT a vaccume, trash bags (if i clean the trash), and a toilet brush. So thats my basic plan.. does this sound.. Cheap? Just right? (perfect!) Reasonable..? (maybe a tad high.. but not bad) Or very pricey? And what price would you recommend if you have a problem with my price?  more

Voting Question: Are my scabies GONE yet?

I was diagnosed with scabies 2 weeks ago. I washed all my bedding, laundry, vacuumed, etc. I put my comforter and HUGE pillows in bags in my closet for the scabies on them to die and have yet to take them out of my closet. I used ALL of the tube one night and the next night I got another tube and split it with my boyfriend. I also washed my sheets again. I was still itchy, which was normal. But my scabies tracks stopped fading. They were HUGE at first and got smaller and smaller after I applied the lotion but then stopped shrinking. Two days ago I scratched my arm A LOT because it was really itchy and all the little white/clear bumps came up. There were so many! So I called my doctor and he sent another prescription lotion over to my pharmacy. This time, I completely cleaned my room again. I probably spent 25 minutes just vaccuming my room. I then put on the whole tube of lotion and put on new clothes that I had just had in the dryer. I also put my everyday pillows in the dryer for about ten minutes because I heard it's the heat that kills them. I took my stuff to the laundry mat. I washed all my bedding and clothes at a laundry mat so they could ALL be done at the same time this time. Also, I kept putting the lotion all over my hands/arms after I put the dirty laundry into the washer machines. Please tell me I am cured! I know you have NO way of telling, but do you think there is still a possibility that I could still have them/get reinvested?? Is there anything I could have done better? How will I know if I'm cured? When will all my sores heal? When will I stop itching.. and most importantly when will the tracks on my legs clear up completely? I just want to know when I'm cured! I am just so paranoid because I had them for 5-6 weeks if not more without even knowing.. so I'm scared that I STILL have them and don't know. Thank you.  more

Resolved Question: Please tell me a name of a VACUUM WITH LITTLE TO NO DUST WHEN CLEANIIINGGG??? Anything!?

Haha =D Im just pissed, made such a mess while cleaning my vacuum. I like to to a extreme cleaning once a week, to keep it working good. It sucks up great, but damm the cleaning is really getting me mad. The vacuum I got, said in bold letter no BAGS, NO DUST to mess with. Ha but never mentioned all the filters. I have no problem with the filters, but there are soo many places inside the vacuum that dust goes, and its soo hard to get put. 2hours of my life.. goes to cleaning it once a week lmaoo. I was cleaning it out yesterday, and I swear dust was everywhere. Ohh and just so you know im allergic to dust. So before I even start cleaning my vacuum I take a Claritin haha. So, Im looking into new vacuums. Any suggestions. I've heard about that h2o vac, that sounds too good to be true. If they sold it near me at a store where I can return it, i'd be all for tyring it. But buying and returning from online stores is not my thing. Never works out right, just waste more money then the crap cost, to being with. Anywhooo.. good vacuums, personally experiences would be great. Voting Question: How to get compensation for hazardous (plaster particles, etc.) renovation in my rented apartment?

I'm a student in Ontario Canada renting an apartment across from school campus. I recently came home and found out they were doing bathroom repairs (repairs I had not asked for, but apparently during routine inspection, management decided to repair it). The bathroom is under heaving construction, and in my living room, I find a big industrial vacuum cleaner, paint cans, plaster, cauqing, etc. along with industrial equipment. My stuff had been moved aside. 4 days later, and it's still under repair. My stuff has a layer of white dust on it (I think it's plaster or particle cement) and I noticed that the repair people all wear dust masks. I live here, but was never told of safety precautions or provided with protection. My skin's been very itchy, but I'm more worried about my lungs. Is there a way to complain about this, and also is there a way to get compensation for this mess? How much compensation can I expect? Resolved Question: Is it normal for a 13 year old boy to be this clumsy?

My son ended up taking to hospital my friends 13 year old son this morning after he managed to injure himself. The boy is staying with us until Sunday night since he has a few days off of school and his mother is busy. Now his mother assures me the boy is clumsy on a regular basis and that what happened does not surprise her, and also that her son has recently been to an optometrist and does not need glasses. However, I just don't think its normal for someone to be this clumsy. The reason for the hospital visit was because he slipped outside and sprained his ankle, as well as hitting his arm on a stump and I guess he must have popped a blood vessel or something because it swelled up two about twice its normal size and you could tell there is some internal bleeding. Now that alone wouldn't make me ask this question, it's winter and icy. What makes me ask this question is since he arrived, he has had quite a bit of unfortunate things happen to him. He somehow hit the corner of a wall and cut the side of his face by his eye, this just needed a band-aid. He also cut his finger at breakfast, again, it just needed a band-aid. He apparently knelt on a razor that had fallen out of his bag when he was looking for his pyjamas, I only found out about that this morning though. He said he tended to it himself by tying on of hi t-shirts to his knee. As well as that, he also stubbed his toe on a vacuum cleaner and tore the skin, and that bled for a few hours. what I want to know is, if you agree with me that this is not normal, what should be done, should he be taken to a head doctor, or a different optometrist or what?  more

Resolved Question: Confessions of a Housekeeper?

I found this article on yahoo news. I am a housekeeper and find this very true. What is your thoughts on it: "As long as it looked clean I cut corners everywhere I could. Instead of vacuuming, I found that just picking up the larger crumbs from the carpet would do. Rather than scrub the tub with hot water, sometimes it was just a spray-and-wipe kind of day. After several weeks on the job, I discovered that the staff leader who inspected the rooms couldn't tell the difference between a clean sink and one that was simply dry, so I would often just run a rag over the wet spots. But I never skipped changing the sheets. I wouldn't sink that low, no matter how lazy I was feeling. A bacterial wonderland I was disgusted by the many guests I came in contact with through the things they left behind: the hairs on the pillow, the urine on the toilet seat, the half-eaten cookie, the stained sheets. One woman had soiled her sheets so thoroughly that we had to toss them in a biohazard bag—they could never be used again. Rooms where young kids stayed were the worst, with food ground into the carpet and piles of used diapers in the trash. That kind of demoralizing mess could take 45 minutes to clean up. Most maids wore rubber gloves when they worked, but mine were too big, so I discarded them. Unsurprisingly, I got the flu twice. Not for love — or money I didn't know maids received tips, so it took me weeks to realize that the coins left in rooms were an intentional gift. My tips were paltry: I almost never received more than $1, and at times guests left religious pamphlets. One day, however, I was shocked to find a crisp $100 bill lying on a table. Although the generous tip put a little spring in my step and compelled me to do a better job that day, it didn't change my work ethic for long. I apologize to you now if you ever stayed in one of my rooms. You deserved better. But if housekeepers were paid more than minimum wage—and the tips were a bit better—I might have cleaned your toilet rather than just flushed it.  more

Resolved Question: Cleaning schedule for a dog with allergies?

My dog was diagnosed with environmental allergies about a month ago. He also exhibits symptoms of food allergies, although my vet will not agree with me about that. He itches himself terribly in the morning, he chews his back paws and legs, he has itchy ears that smell a little off, he rubs his snout in the carpet, he had a bad episode of eye discharges, and he had an episode of vomiting a little while back. In an effort to minimize his itching, I switched him gradually from home-cooked food (prescribed to him after his vomiting episode) to California Natural lamb meal and rice. He's been eating the dry food only for the past 3 days, but the itching has not stopped or subsided yet. I bought a new vacuum cleaner yesterday with a sealed HEPA filtration system and bags from Arm and Hammer that are supposed to trap 99.7% of all allergens. So, after cleaning the house throughly from top to bottom, I washed his bed in hot water and dried it in the highest temp possible. My questions for owners of allergic dogs are: 1) how long until I see some improvement in his itching? and 2) how often should I vacuum the house to keep it allergen free or at least allergy friendly? I have no kids, so it is a household of two adults, 1 dog and 2 cats that shed moderately but not too much. Thank you!  more

Resolved Question: Why does my mother make me clean my room?

It's not dirty like smelly, just disorganized. the floors get vacuumed and mopped btw My bed is always clean (well I throw my blanket in the closet lol I'm suppose to fold it and put it in but i just bunch it up) BUT it's not visible so w.e the thing is my school books are all over my dresser, my bags hanging from like the posts of my bed, cd's everywhere, clothes (CLEAN folded clothes) that doesn't get put away sometimes lol idk random stuff all over the place. WHY does she care, it's not like she spends more than 5 minutes EVER in my room. So whats the big deal? It's not getting in her way I have an organized mess. I find everything quickly. My wallet is under my black skinny jeans, next to my international relations textbook on top of my car keys! you guys are right I guess. I can clean up in less than 10 minutes but ugh BUT my own place will never be messy  more

Resolved Question: bed bugs!? PLEASE help me! need answers asap!!?

just moved in with my boyfriend not too long ago since i was sleeping here every night anyways, and the night before last night i noticed itchy misquito looking bites on my arm and my legs. thought it was maybe a spider that didnt like me very much one night and would be gone, this morning i had more bite marks! so i start peeling apart the bedding after doing some research and thote it may be bed bus, and sure enough, i found one almost 1/4 inch long under the mattress. my boyfriend burned it with a lighter, hopefully it killed it because we were keeping it in a shot glass to show the landlord, and it got knocked over, so i was starting to go through the bedding i placed in the hallway while i cleaned the room, and a found another, but much much smaller on the sheets. got that one, and i put all of the clothing and all of the pillows and all of the blankets it was around into tightly sealed trash bags. i poured baby powder all over the carpet [a web site said that if you do this it will have a more likely chance of keeping any bugs from surviving in a vacuum cleaner] and so now everythings bagged up theres a matress cover on the bed and i have no idea were they came from, was at the house for months and didnt get bites or notice any bugs until two nights ago. so i have no idea where they could have come from, no idea where they could be at this point, and im confused to no end and disgusted! i share a bed with my boyfriend, and they did not bite him AT ALL! but i have well over ten bites on me  more

Resolved Question: Hospitality questions! About coffee, tea etc.?

Here are some questions from the hospitality food and beverage course I'm doing. I have already answered some, but if they are wrong please correct them =) THANKYOU!!! 1.What are the different methods of roasting coffee? There are simple ways of roasting coffee and there are more technical ways, simple ways are pan/stovetop and oven roasting. In between there are home air-poppers and home drum roasters. More technical ways are the many commercial roasters out there. 2.How do you choose the correct grind for the method of brewing? If the method of brewing is only a short time in the appliance then the coffee should be grinded very finely so that the flavors release quickly. If the coffee spends more time in the appliance, such as a percolator the coffee needs to be a coarser grind so that the flavors don’t release too quickly. 3.How should coffee be stored? It should be stored in a cool dry place, like wine. Once the package is open it needs to be stored in an air tight container and used as soon as possible. 4.What equipment is used in coffee making? There are automatic coffee machines that make the whole coffee at the touch of a button and there are many other pieces of equipment used to manually make coffee; -Coffee bean grinders -Percolators -Boiling water units -Espresso machines -Milk frothing jugs -Milk thermometers -Filters -Cups and mugs -Saucers -Spoons 5.What are the different ways of brewing coffee? 1.Turkish - Grind: pulverized 2.Percolator – Grind: coarse 3.Regular drip – Grind: medium-course 4.Plunger – Grind: medium-course 5.Vacuum – Grind: course 6.Cold-water – Grind: course 7.Espresso – Grind: fine 6.What are the different ways in which coffee is served? -Black -White (with milk) -With cream -With or without sugar -Chocolate or cinnamon added 7.What is a scented tea? 8.What is the difference between tea and tea bags? 9.Why is tea brewed? 10. How are milk, lemon and sugar used in tea? 11. How are garnishes used to decorate tea? 12. How should tea be stored? 13. How should tea be served? 14. Why are non-alcoholic drinks gaining in popularity? 15. What fruit and vegetables (fresh, tinned and frozen) does your establishment use? 16. What dairy products are used in non-alcoholic drinks? 17. What cordials and syrups are used in non-alcoholic drinks? 18. What equipment is used to make non-alcoholic drinks? 19. What garnishes are used in your establishment? 20. What glassware is used in your establishment? 21. Why should equipment be kept clean? 22. Why should equipment be maintained correctly?  more
